4 Tips to Get Ready for Fall Photos
It’s officially fall here in Louisville, Kentucky! With the cooler weather and the leaves changing, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about family photos. Also, the holidays are coming up, and if you like to send out holiday cards with updated family photos, now is the time to get the photos done!
You might be wondering, though, how do you prepare for your family photo session? What should everyone wear? What do you need to bring? And how can you make sure the kids don’t melt down? Here are some simple tips to help you get ready and keep things running smoothly during your session.
Finding a location
Work with your photographer to find the best spot for your family photos. Chances are, they know some great hidden gems in your area!
Consider how laid-back you want the session to feel, how easy the location is to access (especially with little ones), and have a backup plan if it rains.
Here are a few of my favorite family photo locations around Louisville:
Your Home: Nothing is cozier and more relaxed than capturing moments where you spend the most of your time. In-home sessions feel natural and comfortable. Check out why I love in-home sessions here.
Cherokee Park: This park has countless spots for photos and plenty of space for the kids to run around and have fun. If you're outside of Louisville, look for a local park with lots of open space.
Bernheim Forest: A short drive from the city, Bernheim is stunning in the fall with its beautiful fields and forests. Consider adding a short hike to your session so your family can fully enjoy the season, and don’t forget to check out the Bernheim Giants!
Quills Coffee: If your family loves coffee or hot chocolate, why not take some relaxed photos at your favorite coffee shop? (My favorite is Quills Coffee!) Grab some drinks, and I’ll capture candid moments of your family enjoying time together. We can finish up with a few shots outside the shop!
2. Deciding What to Wear
When it comes to outfits, I recommend choosing 2-3 colors that work well together and dressing everyone in that palette. You don’t have to match (in fact, it’s better if you don’t!), but you want to wear colors that complement each other.
Here are a few more tips:
Layering is a great way to add depth and texture to your photos—think scarves, vests, or light jackets.
Avoid too many patterns—stick to one patterned piece, and keep the rest in solid colors.
Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable and confident in! If you feel good, it’ll be obvious in your photos.
3. What Do You Need to Bring?
Every photographer is different, so it’s always good to ask. For my sessions, I say all you need to bring is yourselves! If there’s something special you’d like in the photos (like a lovey that helps your kids stay calm), feel free to bring that along, too.
4. How Do You Prepare Your Kids?
I’m not a fan of bribery, so no need to promise your kids candy for smiles! Instead, tell them they’ll be hanging out as a family doing something fun, like grabbing hot chocolate or playing at the park, and I’ll be there to take a few photos.
Try to schedule the session at a time when everyone will be well-rested and in a good mood—right after a nap or in the morning. Evening sessions can be tough for kiddos, so keep that in mind!
If your kids need a bit more time to warm up or explore, consider booking a full-length session instead of a mini session. This gives us plenty of time to let the kids play, take breaks, and feel comfortable.
I love creating space for your kids to just be themselves. Whether they’re playing, laughing, or needing a quick cry, we’ll take our time and keep everything relaxed and fun.
