Autumn is one of my absolute favorite seasons for family photography sessions. The colors of the changing leaves, all the cozy vibes and warm drinks! It’s honestly my favorite time of year in general. Plus the cooler temperatures make it so much more enjoyable to be outside having your photos taken. If you're considering getting your family photos taken, fall is the ideal time for it!

I got to capture the Miller family last fall for the second time, and it was so much fun. When I photographed them last time, their oldest was a toddler and Ashley was still pregnant with their youngest. This session, both boys were running around! It’s always so much fun to get to watch families as they grow.

One of the things I always aim for in family sessions is to create a laid-back atmosphere where everyone, especially the kiddos, can just be themselves. The Miller boys were so excited to run around and pick up leaves and sticks or watch the ducks and turtles. Instead of trying to pose them perfectly or keep them still (which is nearly impossible with kids anyway), I encouraged Ashley and Clay to play with them as they explored the woods.

For me, that’s what family photography is all about. It’s not about forcing a smile or standing stiffly in a line for a posed shot. It’s about capturing the joy, the laughter, and the real connection between you and your kiddos. When kids are allowed to have fun and just be themselves, you can really tell in the photos.. And honestly, those unplanned, candid shots usually end up being the favorites.

Another thing I love about fall is the sense of calm and warmth that comes with it. The cooler weather seems to make everyone slow down just a little, which is exactly the vibe I love to bring into my family sessions. No rush, no stress—just enjoying each other’s company and getting some pretty photos.
